Battlefields Trust Online Talk: Stalingrad - The Battle for Mamayev Kurgan

The Mamayev Kurgan was the hill that dominated the city of Stalingrad and was the scene of the some of the fiercest fighting in 1942-3. It subsequently became a memorial complex honouring the sacrifices during the battle and the Great Patriotic War as a whole. This talk will reconstruct the fighting there (using veteran testimony and combat journals) and also look at the broader theme of memorialisation (amidst contesting interpretations of the conflict), asking whether it helps or hinders our understanding of the battle.
Dr Michael Jones is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has written thirteen books ranging from the Middle Ages to the Falklands War. He is the author of Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed, has led many battlefield tours to the city and was consultant for Russia Today's documentary Children of Stalingrad.
