Siege of Newcastle 1644

Saturday 12th September 2026

From the raising of the Royal Standard in August 1642, to the final storming of the town in October 1644, Newcastle was a cavalier bastion, King Charles only east coast port of significance and its monopoly of the coal trade a serious embarrassment to Parliament.

For most of that time the Marquis of Newcastle maintained the King’s colours backed by his famous brigade or tercio of ‘Whitecoats’. In January 1644, the balance of power in Northumberland shifted as the Scots, their Army of the Solemn League and Covenant, invaded as mercenaries in the pay (if they ever got it ) of Parliament. What happened next shifted the course of British history.

John and Bev will take you around the key sites, describe the action whilst also demonstrating the weapons and fighting styles of the times.

Meet at 10:30am at Newcastle Keep, The Castle, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1RQ
