Battle of Hopton Heath 1643

Saturday 12th September 2026

A chance to visit the battlefield where royalist forces under the Earl of Northampton overcame a parliamentarian army commanded by Sir John Gell in March 1643.

The walk will cover the northern approaches to the battlefield, the parliamentarian deployment, the centre of the field, including the commemorative monument and interpretation board, and the lines of attack by the royalists from the south.

The circular route of about 5km will take about two hours and finish back at the Village Hall, Salt. Mainly along good footpaths, some uneven tracks and fields, stiles and steep slope. Sturdy footwear recommended.

Meet at 2.00 p.m. outside the Village Hall, Salt Rd, Salt, Stafford ST18 0BW.

Thanks to Salt Village Hall, toilet facilities available at start and end of walk. Parking is limited at Village Hall but plenty of careful, considerate parking available on the main village road.

This is a Big Battlefield Walks Weekend event and is free to attend for all (though donations welcome to cover access to Salt Village Hall and to support the work of the Battlefields Trust are welcome).
