Battlefields Trust Online Talk: The Battle of Stoke Field, 1487

Tuesday 15th October 2024

The Battle of Stoke Field, which took place on 16th June 1487, was the final battle of the Wars of the Roses. It saw the end of the campaign to put a pretender, known to us as Lambert Simnel, on the throne of England. The talk will examine what the sources for the battle are and how reliable they might be, before looking at the lead up to the battle, the battle itself and how the battlefield looks today and finally the aftermath, which saw the deaths of 7,000 including all the main leaders of the rebel army, except Simnel.

After 34 years in the Royal Navy, Kevin was looking for a new challenge when he retired at the age of 50. He had always been interested in history and in his final years in the RN he undertook an Open University BA (Hons) History degree, graduating the year after he left the RN in 2009. He began to look at a second career in the museum sector. He is currently the Collections and Exhibitions Officer at the National Civil War Centre – Newark Museum, with responsibility for the 95,000 objects in the collection and for both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

At a conference in Leeds about 11 years ago Kevin was recruited into the Battlefields Trust and became Chair of the East Midlands Region about 10 years ago. In 2018 he successfully fundraised for the installation of interpretation panels for the Battle of Stoke Field (1487) . He is also the Vice Chair and Secretary of Newark Civic Trust and the Chairman of Newark Heritage Forum, which brings all of the heritage organisations in Newark together. In this role he has been the organiser of Heritage Open Days in Newark for the past few years. Kevin has had a lifelong interest in T E Lawrence (of Arabia) and he is currently Chair of the T E Lawrence Society.
