Battle of Coleshill 1157

Saturday 2nd April 2016

Mystery has always shrouded the 1157 conflict between Owain ap Gruffudd, Prince of Gwynedd (better known as Owain Gwynedd) and Henry II, who undertook an armed campaign against Gwynedd in 1157 to check Owain's reclamation of native Welsh territory, which had been seized by the Norman marcher earls, and preserve Anglo-Norman interests in Wales.  The battle  that took place near the modern community of Flint has been controversially referred to as the Battle of Coleshill and the Battle of Coed Eulo.  Local lore and legend has favoured Ewloe Wood as the location of the battle and some have suggested that a battle occurred at both places, but recent research has shed light on a new location and interpretation of events.  Come and join conflict archaeologist Dr. Jackie Veninger on a battlefield walk to learn more about the battle of Coleshill, its role in preserving Welsh independence and Welsh and Anglo-Norman warfare practices in the mid-twelfth century.

Note change in meeting location: Meet at Flint Public Library, Church Street, Flint (CH6 5AP)) at 10:00am.
