Hopton Heath 1643 - CANCELLED

Saturday 13th September 2025

Unfortunately, due to an injury to the walk leader this event has had to be cancelled. We will try and run the walk again in 2026.

A walk exploring this important Staffordshire battle where the royalists under the Earl of Northampton defeated the parliamentarians under Sir John Gell.

This walk, marking the 30th anniversary of Historic England’s 'Register of Historic Battlefields'  (List entry: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000015 from 1995) and 382nd anniversary of the battle, will cover the northern approaches to the battlefield, the line of deployment of the parliamentarians, the centre of the field, including the commemorative monument and interpretation board, and the lines of attack by the royalists from the south. It will include some visual and ‘hands-on’ aids.

Meet 2.00pm outside the Village Hall, Salt Rd, Salt, Stafford ST18 0BW.

The circular route of about 3km will take about two hours and finish back at the Village Hall, Salt. Mainly along good footpaths, some uneven tracks and fields, stiles and steep slope. Sturdy footwear recommended. Thanks to Salt Village Hall, toilet facilities will be available at start and end of walk. There is only limited parking at the village hall, but parking is available on the main village road if done carefully and considerately.
