Battlefields Trust Online Lecture: The Battle for Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries: Mount Badon in context

Wednesday 24th January 2024

The battle of Mount Badon - Gildas' Mons Badonicus - is one of the few fifth- or early sixth- century British military engagements of which one can be reasonably sure. While the event is almost certain, the location, opposing forces and other details of the battle have been much debated by historians, archaeologists and even literary scholars interested in the Arthurian legend - the latter idue to the fact that the ninth-century Historia Brittonum attributes the battle to Arthur. This talk will consider where, when, how and why the battle of Badon may have been fought, and put this into the context of the emerging picture of Britain in the immediately post-Roman centuries.

Professor Ken Dark (King's College London) is an archaeologist and historian who has worked and published on fifth- to seventh-century Britain throughout his career, and currently directs the Tintagel Hinterland Project - an investigation into the immediate surroundings of the most important settlement site of this date in western Britain.
