Battlefields Trust Online Talk: Locating the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold, 1646

Thursday 3rd October 2024

The traditional site of the battle of Stow-on-the-Wold is located around 2.6 kilometres north of the town square on Horsington Hill north–west of the village of Donnington. This was the battlefield area that was identified by English Heritage (Historic England since 2015) in 1995 in its register of historic battlefields, though an unpublished 1999 English Heritage report had suggested an amendment to the registration, moving the battle southwards to 1.2 kilometres north of the town. This talk examines the documentary, map, and archaeological evidence arising from the Battlefields Trust’s investigations during 2015–2022 into the location of the battlefield. It questions the current battlefield registration and proposes a new area for the fighting.
