Battlefields Trust online lecture: General at Sea Blake, the Commonwealth Navy & the siege of St Mary 1651

Monday 20th September 2021

Commander (Retired) Tim Stoneman will speak about “General at Sea Blake, the Commonwealth Navy & the Siege of St Mary 1651”.

Parliamentarian sea power in the British Civil Wars is an area that deserves to be better known, as does the career of General at Sea Blake (technically he never held the rank of Admiral, indeed he started out as an infantryman in the New Model Army). He is a figure sometimes called the “Father of the Royal Navy”. The siege of St Mary’s in the Scilly Isles and the defeat there of the Royalist Sir John Grenville marked the end of Royalist maritime hopes.

We are delighted that we will have Tim with us to explain this battle. He is the Secretary of the Guild of Battlefield Guides. A Westcountryman by birth, with a maritime interest from an early age, he served in the Royal Navy for 35 years, including service at sea in the Falklands and in the First Gulf War.

This presentation is exclusive to Battlefields Trust members. It starts at 8pm and booking will be on-line in response to a Mailchimp invitation sent to all Trust members.
