Battle of Winceby
On 11th October 1643, less than a mile north of this spot, there was a brief but significant battle between the Royalists, led by the Earl of Newcastle and Sir William Widdrington, and the Parliamentarians, led by Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax. The Royalist stronghold at Bloingbroke Castle was under siege by the Parliamentarians, and a force of 2500-3000 cavalry and dragoons was on its way to raise it. However, at nearby Winceby, the Royalists were intercepted by a Parliamentarian force of equal strength.
Slash Hollow
The Battle of Winceby lasted no more than half an hour. The defeated Royalists fled south-westwards into Slash Hollow, and thence toward 'Winsby gate' (in the boundary hedge to your left). Chased by the avenging Parliamentarians, scores of Royalist dragoons reached the gateway at the same moment. Tragically the boundary gate did not open into Hameringham, but into Winceby. Impossible to pull the gate towards them because of the numbers pushing against it, the Royalists were trapped and brutally massacred from behind.
