Memorial Notes:

King Christian IV of Denmark was the uncle of King Charles I on his mother's side. Christian IV was sympathetic to Charles I early in the war, sending his special ambassador, Korfitz Ulfeldt, to England in October 1642 to discuss Danish support in return for the isles of Orkney and Shetland being ceded back to Denmark. Charles I initially balked at this proposal, but in the summer of 1643 under increasing financial strain, he agreed. Christian IV sent an arms shipment of arms to England, but the ship, the Ark Christian, was captured by Parliament. In response, Christian seized some English ships carrying cloth, which were redeemed by a London merchant based in Hamburg, and sent the money obtained to the Queen. The Danish Swedish War of 1643-1645 then intervened, preventing further Danish support to the royalist cause. In 1647 Christian IV accepted a loan of 25,000 rix-dollars from Parliament and in return acknowledged its authority.
