Installation Date:

The protective grill appears have been installed in the early 1890s to prevent pieces being chipped from the stone by "the vandal tourist" (Berwickshire Naturalists Club, Vol 14). The adjacent cairn is 20th century.

Inscription:

"On this stone according to unbroken tradition was raised the standard of the Covenanters when in 1639 their army under Sir Alex Leslie assembled on Duns Law" Beside the stone is a more recent stone cairn with a plaque reading: "This cairn commemorates the encampment here of the Covenanters under General Sir Alexander Leslie in 1639.

Condition Description:

The stone itself shows signs of the damage which caused the erection of the protective grill, but the plaque and the more modern cairn are in very good condition. The monument is surrounded by a wooden fence which is well maintained.

Memorial Notes:

The monument is in the north-west corner of a small earthwork redoubt erected either during the 1639 campaign or during subsequent Covenanter operations in the area. This itself sits within the ramparts of a prehistoric fort. Access can only be gained on foot, using the footpath (uphill) from the Castle Street entrance to Duns Castle estate.
