MASSACRE
THIS TOWER ARCH HAS WITNESSED A SCENE OF VIOLENT
BLOODSHED. ON CHRISTMAS EVE 1643, AFTER 18
MONTHS OF CIVIL WAR, 20 VILLAGERS TOOK REFUGE IN
THE CHURCH TOWER.
PLUNDERING ROYALIST TROOPS
PURSUED THEM, SMOKED THEM OUT WITH A FIRE OF
FLOOR RUSHED, MATS, AND SEATS, STRIPPED THE SURREN-
DERING VILLAGERS NAKED AND MURDERED OR WOUNDED
ALL BUT THREE
