This area of planting is a living commemoration of the Battle of Winwick which took place on 19 August 1648 and in which many men lost their lives.
The battle was fought in the fields to the north of here and concluded around St Oswald’s Church. Foot soldiers of a Scottish Army, known as the ‘Engagers’, that had marched into England in support of Charles I, were placed at the Winwick ‘Pass’, as part of a rear-guard defence under the command of Lieutenant-General William Baillie. The ‘Engagers’ were decisively defeated by an Army of the English Parliament under the command of Oliver Cromwell, in what would be the last major battle of the Second Civil War.
