The Civil Wars
Light field pieces were typically attached to the infantry regiments. They included various sizes of gun, the ideal being a saker, which fired an iron ball of about 6 pounds with an extreme range of about 2500 yards. They would fire such round shot at long distances but at close quarters they could fire case shot, very effective anti-personnel munitions comprising dozens of musket balls delivered with a similar effect, on a much larger scale, to a modern shotgun.
