Brother of the Dean of Salisbury, Cheney served as bodyguard and Chief Henchman to Kings Edward IV, Richard III and Henry VII. At the Battle of Bosworth he was unhorsed but unhurt by a blow from Richard III, rescuing the Tudor's banner when the bearer, Sir William Brandon, had been killed. He was JP for Dorset, MP for Wiltshire and served on the king's council. After a distinguished military career, he died in 1499. His tomb was originally in the {Bishop) Beauchamp Chantry.
