Summer Reading
14 July 2020
Two of our partner organisations, the Northamptonshire Battlefields Society and the Simon de Montfort Society have recently produced new publications:
Battles and Battlefields of Northamptonshire by Graham Evans and Mike Ingram.
Northamptonshire Battlefields Society, 2020. 156 pages. £9.99
“This book fills in the violent background of one of England's County Shires. Covering nearly 2000 years of history it looks at the campaigns, battles and skirmishes that have taken place in Historic Northamptonshire. The book is not just a military history, but a celebration of the county's wide ranging and nationally significant history. Written in an engaging and uncomplicated style this book has something both for the genuine enthusiast and also something for the casual reader. Numerous maps are provided and there is guidance on how to visit the battlefields today, together with suggestions for further reading.”
Publications from the Northamptonshire Battlefields Society can be ordered directly from the Society, by emailing wildrat1460@gmail.com. The Society currently has two other books available, ‘Battle of Northampton 1460’ by Mike Ingram and ‘Battle of Edgcote 1469 – Re-evaluating the evidence’ by Graham Evans. Each book is £9.99. Postage is free to full members of the Northamptonshire Battlefields Society, and £3 per volume for non-members.
1265: The murder of Evesham by David Snowden
Simon de Montfort Society, 2020. 274 pages. £12.50
“Most battles were typical of their time, and a few were pivotal, with significant social or political consequences. Evesham was such a battle. If the outcome of the battle had been different we might have been living in a very different country today. But for an accident of timing 750 years ago the United Kingdom might not exist today. This book is an analysis of that pivotal battle by a confessed Montfortian, drawing heavily upon contemporary or near contemporary sources supplemented by the work of later historians and of battlefield archaeologists… and a shrewd appraisal of the battlefield landscape.”
