Neere this place resteth the body of the worthy citizen & solder Martin Bond esq. son of Will Bond sherife & alderman of London. he was captain in the yeare 1588 at the camp at Tilbury & after remained chiefe captain of the trained bands of this citty until his death. He was a marchant adventurer & free of the Company of Haberdasher. he lived to the age of 85 yeares and dyed in May 1643. His pyety prudence courage and charity have left behinde him a never dyeing monument.

The church contains a monument to Martin Bond (d. 1643), who was with the Trained Bands at Tilbury in 1588. The memorial features soldiers in uniforms from the 1640s. The church also contains a number of defaced brasses, but these were not reckless acts of vandalism: instead, as the parish accounts identify defacing the superstitious inscriptions was a sanctioned act of iconoclasm.
