St. Bertoline’s Tower
…On the inside, under the tower, a massacre
took place. This was in 1643 when the
Royalists burned forms, rushes and mats to
smoke out the villagers seeking shelter in the
tower but 12 of the villagers who surrendered
were brutally murdered.
