Battlefields Trust Online Talk: Aspects of the Battle of Hastings - Questions and Controversies

Wednesday 14th October 2026

The Bayeux Tapestry’s arrival in the UK for display at the British Museum has boosted public interest in the events of 1066, especially the battle of Hastings. In this illustrated Zoom lecture, Julian Humphrys, co-chair of the Battlefields Trust’s South London and South East Region, will explore some of the key talking points about the battle, including its location, how it unfolded, and how it and the events preceding it are depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.

An experienced writer, speaker and guide with a strong historical background. After reading History at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and completing a postgraduate course at the Polytechnic of North London, Julian spent 12 years at Chelsea’s National Army Museum, setting up special exhibitions including its acclaimed Road to Waterloo Gallery, liaising with the British Army and acting as spokesman to the media on all matters of military history. He made three expeditions to Bosnia during the Civil War to record the British Army’s activities there and to obtain objects for display in the Museum.

Julian is a lecturer and has acted as a historical expert on several TV programmes, featured a number of times on BBC Radio 4’s Ramblings Series, made contributions to a wide variety of historical publications, and written scripts for multi-media audio tours.

A qualified blue-badge guide, he set up English Heritage Tours Through Time programme of guided visits to historic properties and its battlefield hikes programme, which he now leads in addition to lecturing on a wide range of tours for special interest travel companies.

From 2009-2020, he was Development Officer of the Battlefields Trust.
