Battlefields Trust Online Talk: Guernsey's Role in the Civil War and the Imprisonment of Sir John Lambert

Guernsey's role in the Civil War with a Royalist garrison controlling Castle Cornet while the majority of islanders were strong Presbyterian and Calvinist sympathisers who sided with Parliament. The talk will include the capture and escape of the three Jurats (parliamentary commissioners) the nine-year siege of Castle Cornet, finally surrendering on 19th December 1651 and the imprisonment of Major-General Sir John Lambert from 1661 to 1670.

James currently teaches History at Les Varendes High School in Guernsey. He was previously Head of History at Norton College in North Yorkshire and moved to focus more on his own research. He has previously written and taught Local History and Folklore for both adults and children for North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale Folk Museum and Malton Museum. He has also been involved in making small History/Folklore films for Eboracum pictures including a filmed re-enactment with Hovingham Primary School of the Battle of Hastings. He is currently linking with BBC Guernsey and Blue Ormer Books to promote medieval and Early Modern Guernsey History.
