Civil War Newark and the 1644 battle

Sunday 13th September 2026

Kevin Winter will lead a Civil War tour of Newark and its 1644 battlefield. Explore some of the places that were at the heart of key events, ending at the Queens Sconce.

The tour will begin at 11:00am at the bandstand in Newark Castle (Castle Gate, Newark NG24 1BG), where the reason Newark became known as 'The Key to the North' can be seen.

We will then visit some of the buildings that played a part in the towns Civil War history and remain standing. We will explore some of the characters, such as Baron Dohna, Hercules Clay and Prince Rupert who were significant players in Civil War Newark.

After making our way around the town and visiting the site of the battle of Newark on 21 March 1644, we will head back to the castle and then along the river towards the Queen's Sconce. This fortification, built to defend the town from Parliamentarian attack is the best-preserved 17th century earthwork in the country.

This is a Big Battlefield Walks Weekend event and is free to attend for all. Spaces are limited to 30 people and prebooking required at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/big-battlefield-walks-weekends-civil-war-newark-and-its-1644-battle-tickets-1983252653073?aff=oddtdtcreator
