Battle of Maldon 991

Saturday 13th September 2025

The Battle of Maldon saw the local Anglo-Saxon forces under the leadership of Byrhtnoth, the Ealdorman of Essex defeated by a raiding force of Danes and Norwegian.

The battle was commemorated in an Anglo-Saxon poem written a few years later, providing more information about it than any other battle from pre-Norman England.

The walk will tour the battle site, cross the tidal causeway to Northey Island, and finish with a visit to the statue of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth on the  promenade at Maldon. The visit will take 2-3 hours.

Meet at 10:30am near the toilet block in Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon CM9 5JQ (What3Words: yours.motorist.relaxing). Promenade Park Car Park charges are £8.00 up to 4hrs. Ticket machines currently only accept card payments.

As this is a Big Battlefield Walks Weekends event advance booking is required. Please visit Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1360410026009?aff=oddtdtcreator to reserve a ticket. If you are unable to attend after you have made a booking, please let the walk organiser know using the contact details below or cancel your booking on Eventbrite.

Promenade Park toilet blocks include disabled facilities and a Changing Places toilet accessed by Radar key. There are no toilet or catering facilities on Northey Island.

The walk is along uneven riverside paths, and access is via a tidal causeway which is uneven and slippery. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and it is unsuitable for wheelchair access. You are welcome to bring a picnic onto the island.
