Rupert: The Cavalier and his Conflicts/ The Sealed Knot Battle of Marston Moor Commemoration Weekend

28th and 29th June 2025

Talk: 2:30pm, Long Marston Village Hall, Long Marston YO26 7LW

The battles of Vlotho, Marston Moor and Naseby are key links in the
chain of Prince Rupert of the Rhine's military career, with the prince growing in
experience and seniority at each encounter.

After writing a new biography of Prince Rupert, historian, author and Battlefields Trust Joint Chair Mark Turnbull will discuss new academic research about Vlotho and Powick Bridge together with his own findings relating to Marston Moor and Naseby, and the unearthed primary sources which provide fresh interpretations as well as busting
a few myths.

Mark Turnbull's childhood visit to Helmsley Castle, North Yorkshire, at the age of 10 provided the foundations of a passionate interest in King Charles I and the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

An Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Mark has re-enacted battles of the period with the Sealed Knot, and also produces a podcast called 'CavalierCast - The Civil War in Words' which is the first (and longest running) podcast solely dedicated to the civil wars. It explores a variety of topics with leading historians, authors, re-enactors, archaeologists, and curators.

Following the talk there will be an opportunity to buy copies of Mark’s new book together with some of his previous publications, which he will be happy to sign.

This talk is free. Voluntary contributions are welcomed, with proceeds to be split between The Battlefields Trust and repairs to the historic church of St Helen, Bilton-in-Ainsty.

The Marston Moor battle commemoration weekend is also being held 10:30am-4:30pm on 28/29th June by The Sealed Knot, and includes a Living History Camp, military displays, and a march to the battle monument by the armies on the morning of the 29th.
