The battle of Guildown: Surrey and the Cornish march on London

Friday 16th May 2025

In the summer of 1497, thousands of Cornishmen, incensed by increased royal taxation, embarked on a remarkable march across southern England to present their grievances to the government of Henry VII and demand the dismissal of his chief ministers. On 14 June, their journey had brought them to the Hog’s Back, just outside Guildford and Godalming, where they were attacked by a royal force. Julian Humphrys tells the story in this illustrated lecture organised by Godalming  Museum.
