Britain’s Coastal Defences - CANCELLED

Richard Shenton will be leading a walk looking at how Britain was repeatedly threatened with foreign invasions and how elaborate defences were prepared to deal with these dangers. Meet at 10.30 am at the Seaford Martello Tower, post code BN25 1JH.
The Martello Tower houses Seaford’s Museum and Historical Society. Opening times are 11.00 – 16.00 and Admission (2013) is £2.00. There is a linked ticked to Newhaven Fort and Eastbourne Redoubt Fortress which will give a reduced entry price at these venues. There is a public Car Park between the Martello Tower and Splash Point (Seaford Head) as well as Public Toilets and also beachside refreshments.
There is a pub by Newhaven harbour mouth called THE HOPE INN, post code BN9 9DN, that offers food if desired. Alternatively, there are other pubs in Newhaven as well as a Canteen within in the Fort. Public Toilets are available at Fort Road Recreation Ground, (post code BN9 9DL, also known as the last public toilets before France!).

It is intended to explore the defences at the base of the cliff before proceeding up to Castle Hill to explore the WW2 gun emplacements before finishing the day in the Fort itself.
