Battlefields Trust Online Lecture: Military medicine through the ages
Wednesday 17th April 2024
A “Brief History of the Army Medical Services: Pioneers and Innovation” delves into the rich and evolving narrative of the United Kingdom's Army Medical Services, spanning from the Civil War to the present day. The talk explores how both pioneers and innovation have significantly shaped healthcare today.
Beginning with the origins of the Army Medical Services, the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of key historical events, wars, and conflicts that have influenced the trajectory of military medicine in the UK. From the challenges faced on the battlefields to the development of ground-breaking medical technologies, the talk shows the resilience and adaptability of the army medical services in the face of adversity. It also highlights key individuals who became trailblazers in their field and how they, too, played a pivotal role in shaping the course of military medicine. The presentation will feature key items from the museum's collection to help tell this compelling story and, hopefully, inspire you all to come see them in person!
David Wiggins has been immersed in the museum world since 2013, initially with the Rifles Collection. Currently, he holds the position of Associate Curator at the Museum of Military Medicine. His academic background includes a BA in History (specialising in modern British and Irish history), an MA in Museum Studies, and a recently completed Diploma in the History of Medicine through the Society of Apothecaries. Beyond the museum sphere, his interests extend to astronomy and enjoying leisurely country walks with his dog.
