Battlefields Trust 2013 Conference and AGM

31 October 2012

Battlefields Trust Annual Conference, St Aidan's College, University of Durham, Friday 5th to Monday 8th April 2013

The 2013 Conference of the Battlefields Trust will be hosted by the Trust's North East and Borders Region and will be based at St Aidan's College, Durham University. Events will include a field trip to Northumberland to visit the battlefields of Homildon Hill and Flodden (which will be commemorating its 500th anniversary), lectures, walks and talks, a conference dinner and a number of 'fringe' events before and after the conference.

The conference will be open to members and (on payment of a small surcharge) non-members and it will be possible either to book accommodation for the whole event or to attend parts of the conference.

Please click HERE to download a conference programme and booking form

In our programme of events we have tried to reconcile the desire to make the most of a visit to the North East with the different budgets and time that our members can dedicate to the conference. We will therefore be offering a core Saturday – Sunday featuring some of the highlights and for those who would like to make the most of the weekend, a programme of visits on the Friday and Monday.
The highlights are the battle of Flodden, in its quincentenary year and Homildon Hill, where the Battlefields Trust is examining a new interpretation of the battlefield. We will spend Saturday visiting these battlefields, guided by local experts. In the evening we will have the Trust’s annual dinner. Our Guest of Honour will be Professor Michael Prestwich, MA, DPhil, FRHistS, FSA. On Sunday morning we will hear about some of the many other battles and sieges of the region. In the afternoon we will hold our Annual General Meeting and hold some workshops to hear views about the Trust’s work and the challenges facing it.
On Monday there will be an opportunity to take part in a battlefield tour to visit some of the battles we hear about on Sunday. Depending on the numbers this will either be using members’ cars or, if numbers merit it, we will hire a coach.
The AGM will take place at 14.00 on Sunday 7th April. There is no charge for attending the AGM itself.
Our guest speaker:
Professor Michael Prestwich, MA, DPhil, FRHistS, FSA is Professor (emeritus) in the Department of History of the University of Durham and a member of the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies
He specialises in the history of thirteenth and fourteenth-century England. He has written extensively on the political, military and economic aspects of this period, perhaps most notably in his biography of Edward I (1988), and his volume of the New Oxford History of England, Plantagenet England 1225-1360 (2005). His works on military history include  Armies and Warfare in the Middle Ages; the English Experience (1996). Professor Prestwich has written about fifty articles and chapters in journals and edited volumes. His next major project will be a book about English medieval castles

Battlefields Trust Job Adverts

25 November 2012

The Battlefields Trust is a charity. Our aim is to preserve, interpret and present battlefields as historical and educational resources. Over the last twenty years the Trust has fought against development on or around battlefields in the UK and overseas. It has installed information boards to improve presentation of nationally important battlefields to the public. In addition, the Trust has undertaken research to better understand battlefields and developed contacts with academics working in this area.

We are working on a programme of major projects covering battlefield preservation, presentation, interpretation, and development for educational purposes. We are seeking to recruit for several positions. Most of these are unpaid, and are likely to be of interest to someone seeking to undertake charitable work as part of a portfolio career or as a retirement activity. Currently we can only offer work experience or a showcase for expertise. Of course, if we are successful in our funding bids we may be in a position to offer project work in various aspect of battlefield heritage management.

We are looking for fund raisers willing to sell advertising space or our commercial services on a commission only basis or obtain local or national corporate sponsorship on a payment by results basis within the guidelines of the Institute of Fund-raising.

We are planning three substantial battlefield projects covering the next few years. All of these will need volunteers to help to run the projects and promote them to communities.

This is a project to extend the investigations started at Bosworth to cover other Wars of the Roses battles and sieges (upward of 15 sites).

We plan to set up a Magna Carta Trail covering as many as possible of the dozens of sites associated with the battles and sieges of the C13th wars that led to the signing of Magna Carta and secured it within English government.

The Centenary of the Great War is an opportunity to document, preserve and interpret the heritage of the world's first strategic aerial bombing campaign, the German air war against Britain 1915-18.
