Battles of Buttington 893 and Montgomery 1644
Saturday 21st May 2022
A full day's itinerary led by Martin Hackett looking at the sites of the battles of Buttington (893) and Montgomery (1644).
Arrive at the Green Dragon Inn Buttington (SY21 8SS) for an 11.00 start.
Park on the Right-Hand side of the car-park as you face the Inn.
The itinerary is as follows.
11.00 until 12.00 spent at Buttington site.
Details of the battle provided upon the most likely site of this battle and landmarks shown.
12.00 Buffet lunch at the Green Dragon Inn is £7 a head not including drinks which can be purchased from the Inn.
Opportunity if the weather is nice to sit in the garden overlooking the battle area. Seating inside if the weather is inclement.
13.00 in cars arranged over lunch, drive to Montgomery.
En-route we look at Rhyd Chwima the "Swift Ford" which is why so many fortifications were placed in this area.
We then park in the square at Montgomery.
Approx.. 1.5 mile walk from the square (but with steep gradients) to Montgomery Castle.
This route goes via Ffridd Faldwyn a hill-fort which overlooks the castle the first guardian of the ford.
Study the siege and battle from within the castle looking down on the landscape of the battle and the superb topography.
Walk down back to the square (shortest route).
Optional - an additional 2 mile walk to Offa's Dyke. Cars can be driven to Offa's Dyke but it can be a dangerous road and there is little parking.
