Looking south from the royalist position, beside Appledown Lane below Dark Coppice, towards the parliamentarian position on the second ridge. Cheriton Wood lies on that ridge on the left hand side. The battle was fought mainly in the intervening valley. In McGovern's metal detecting survey the field in the foreground was found to contain large numbers of lead bullets from the firefight between infantry units, probably in the later stages of the battle.
