New lunchtime lecture series

The Battlefields Trust is delighted to announce that its new lunchtime lecture series will be hosted by the Fusilier_Museum in the Tower of London.

An exciting line up of published military historians and archaeologists will be discussing everything from the English Civil War to The Tommy’s experience of Iraq.

Tickets are £25 per head (£20 for Battlefields Trust members) and include a sandwich lunch.

All profits go to fund the work ot the Battlefields Trust in preserving, interpreting and developing Britain's battlefields both at home and abroad.

Naseby: The Battle then and the Battlefield Now

Naseby was the decisive battle of the English Civil War, securing the eventual victory of Parliament and opening the door to the growth of democratic government. While other major battles – Hastings, Bosworth and Culloden– are well marked, Naseby had been neglected for many years before the Battlefields Trust set up a working party to plan development in 2001.

Martin Marix Evans is a prolific author of military history and has been leading the development of the interpretation of Naseby Battlefield. The profit from this talk will be donated to the Naseby Battlefield Project.

Carole Divall

Waterloo: Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte

The battle of Waterloo was the climactic battle of the Napoleonic era and the only battle in which Napoleon faced the Duke of Wellington. The battle for the fortified farm buildings in front of the allied line was a key aspect of the battle.

Carole Divall specialises in the social history of the Napoleonic Wars and has written extensively about the daily life of the armies of the era.

The funds raised from this event will be donated to the Hougoumont Project. This is the project to restore the currently derelict farm complex and preserve this iconic part of the battlefield of Waterloo.

Professor William Philpott

Landscapes of the Somme

William Philpott has been Professor of the History of Warfare in The Department of War Studies, King’s College London since 2011. His current research interests lie in the field of First World War military history at the strategic, operational and tactical levels.

His book “Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and the Making of the Twentieth Century was published in 2009. He is currently writing a new study of the strategic and military conduct of the First World War, War of Attrition, to be published by Little, Brown in 2013, and also editing the command diaries of Field Marshal Sir John French, 1914–15, for the Army Records Society
