Battle of Assundun 1016

Saturday 10th September 2016

To commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of this important battle, which saw the Anglo-Saxons under King Edmund Ironside defeated by Canute and his Viking army and the end of Anglo-Saxon rule, a heritage open-day event for all the family is being held at Waltons Park, Ashdon, Saffron Walden, CB10 2JD from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Regia Anglorum will have a living-history camp showing daily life 1,000 years ago and there will be battle skirmishes throughout the day culminating in the major battle re-enactment at 3.00 p.m. There will be a great fete-like event, with stalls and children’s activities provided by local groups. The Battlefields Trust will have a stall there and Clare Mulley, the Trust's poet, will be reading her own Assundun poem! Saffron Walden Museum will also bring a display of artefacts from the period.
