The Siege of Reading and the Battle of Chalgrove 1643

Saturday 25th February 2017

Simon Marsh will explore John Hampden’s role in Parliament’s 1643 campaign against the King.  From the typhoid ridden trenches before the town of Reading and the slow march of the Earl of Essex’s army to Thame, discover  the dramatic story of how a parliamentarian turncoat with news of a £20,000 pay convoy resulted in John Hampden’s mortal wounding and death.

Simon Marsh is the Battlefields Trust Research Coordinator and Mercia Region Chair.  He co-authored Battle for London (Amberley, 2010) about the Edgehill campaign and the royalist attack on London in 1642 with Dr Stephen Porter.  He has written about the Civil War for the Journal of Army Historical Research and Pike and Shot Society.

Saturday 25th February 2017 at 2:30pm at the Bucks County Musuem, Church Street, Aylesbury, HP20 2QP.
