Magna Carta and Second Barons' War Walk

Thursday 9 July 2015

Peter Burley will be leading a walk in St Albans on a Magna Carta and Second Barons' War theme at 7pm on Thursday 9 July 2015.

The walk is under the aegis of the St Albans Museum Service, and is a fundraising event for the museum project as well as an MC800 event.  It will also link to the summer programme of events at the museum on life in medieval St Albans.  The walk will be about 2 miles in length and take about 90 minutes.  It will start (and finish) at the Museum of St Albans in Hatfield Road AL1 3RR (NOT the Roman Museum in Verulamium).  It is almost entirely on roads and pavements, so the going should be easy.  However, the last time I led a summer evening walk on this route it turned out to be in a monsoon!

The theme is what made St Albans so attractive to the Barons in 1213 to meet there to plan the Magna Carta by reference to the politics of the Abbey, the jurisdictional status of St Albans (outside royal jurisdiction) and the strength of the medieval fortifications - some of which can still be seen.  The walk concludes with an episode from the Second Barons' War.

Further information and booking details will be from the organiser Elizabeth Adey in due course.
