War in Legend and Tradition - Fort Amerhurst

Saturday 6th to 7th September 2014

A two-day conference on War in Legend and Tradition will be held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2014 as the ninth Legendary Weekend of the Folklore Society, at Fort Amherst in Chatham, Kent – a Napoleonic stronghold overlooking the Medway.

We’d like to hear from anyone who knows about tales and beliefs in wartime – folklorists, veterans, storytellers, re-enactors, military historians or poor bloody infantry. The main event will take place on Saturday with additional material including a tour of the fort on Sunday.

We still have space for audience. Tickets are £40 for the two days, and information on travel and accommodation will be supplied.

We can also still consider papers. Presentations, which should be 20 minutes long, can take the form of talks, performances, or DVD. Among the themes already covered are allegories, women warriors, the Angels of Mons, invulnerable heroes, remembrance, rumours of the enemy at home, and spectral fighters.

If you would like to attend or to present a paper or performance, please contact Sophia Kingshill.
