Second Battle of St. Albans 1461
Sunday 11th May 2014
The Medieval Siege Society is holding re-enactments of the battle on 17 and 18 May 2014 on Bernards Heath. Before you watch this, come and explore the history and the landscape of the battle at a joint event with Sandridge 900+ and the Battlefields Trust.
The Trust will be running a study afternoon on the battle to put the re-enactment into context and answering questions such as:
• Why did Warwick the Kingmaker make his stand on Bernards Heath?
• How did the battle fit into the wider Wars of the Roses?
• What were the tactics and weapons used?
• Did Henry VI really spend the battle singing hymns to himself?
• How did the landscape influence the battle?
The event will be a walk starting promptly at 2pm from the Church Hall (St. Saviour's Church Hall, Sandpit Lane, St Albans, Herts AL1 4DF) around the Bernards Heath part of the battlefield, followed by refreshments (which can be bought in the Church Hall from the Friends of St Saviour’s) and then an illustrated talk and discussion about the battle by local experts. There will also be some exhibits and displays.
There will be some off-road walking, so please wear suitable foot wear. You are welcome to attend the talk only, but please let us know if you want to do that when you book.
Attendance at this event is free through the generosity of Sandridge 900+, but please book in advance to enable the organisers to know numbers. Admission will be by pre-booking. Please contact Peter Burley - peterburley@btinternet.com, 01727 831413 or by post to 60 Seymour Road, St Albans, Herts. AL3 5HW.
