Battle of Lewes 1264

2014 is the 750th anniversary of the crucial battle of Lewes when a rebel army led by Simon de Montfort defeated King Henry III. The battle led to the summoning of Britain's first recorded representative parliament in 1265. The walk will be led by John Freeman, a member of the Battle of Lewes 750th Celebration Steering Committee.

  

 

Meet at 11 am at Lewes Castle entrance- 169 high Street, Lewes, BN71YE. The Castle opens at 11 am and we suggest a visit ( £7.00 entrance fee) which offers views towards the battle field and was Prince Edward’s, (later Edward I) base. We then will be proceeding to the Priory (Henry 111’s base).Parking in the town car parks, (John can email/post maps).

 

Lunch can be taken in a cafe/pub at approx 1.00pm.

 

 

Drive to the East Sussex county Council Car Park, St. Anne's Crescent BN71UE to start walk at 2.00pm. Walk up onto Landport Downs. Expect to return to cars by 4.00 pm. The distance to walk is approx. 2 miles. The path up onto the Downs could be muddy after the rains.
