750th Anniversary of the Battle of Lewes 1264

Saturday 3rd May – Sunday 18th May 2014

In May 2014 the Sussex town of Lewes will be marking one of the pivotal events of British History when it commemorates the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes 1264. The victory of the rebel army led by Simon de Montfort over King Henry III led to the summoning of Britain's first recorded representative parliament in 1265.

The commemorations will include family festivals, a costumed march through the town, a series of talks at Lewes Castle, tours of the battlefield, drama, art, music and the unveiling of a hand-stitched tapestry. There will also be a festival for young people celebrating democracy, which will include a 13th century camp and a new play by celebrated poet John Agard about Simon de Montfort.
