Battle of Lansdown 1643

On 5 July 1643, in one of the toughest battles of the English Civil War, a Royalist army under Sir Ralph Hopton fought its way up the steep slopes of Lansdown Hill, three miles north of Bath. They held on against repeated Parliamentarian counter-attacks and at the end of the day were masters of the field. But the price had been heavy - they had suffered heavy losses and Sir Bevil Grenvile, one of their best-loved commanders, had been mortally wounded.

Join the Trust's Development Officer Julian Humphrys on a guided battlefield walk which includes access to areas that are not normally accessible to the public, including the steep slope up which the Royalists attacked, and goes through some beautiful countryside with truly spectacular views.

Departs: 2.30pm from Liliput Farm, Lower Hamswell, nr Bath, BA1 9DE. Parking available at the farm. (This 2hr 30min event includes at least one steep climb, and stout shoes are essential)

Teas and coffees will be available to purchase at the end of the walk.

Pre-booking essential. Cost: £10.00 (£7.50 Battlefields Trust members). Proceeds will be shared between the Battlefields Trust and Heropreneurs, a UK charity which works to help former members of the armed forces and their spouses to fulfil their potential to set up and run their own businesses.
